Litteratur i digitale omgivelser

Web designers become app developers with PhoneGap

PhoneGap represents a tremendous opportunity for web designers and developers. With it, you can apply your existing skill set for creating web pages and applications with HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript to create mobile apps that can be sold in the popular app marketplaces. PhoneGap makes app development for mobile devices more accessible to a broader pool of developers — including web designers who don't handle all that much code.

A Short History of the Highrise

The New York Times’s Op-Docs and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) have debuted their immersive, interactive multimedia series, A Short History of the Highrise yesterday.

Optimised for tablet and comprised of videos on urban highrise living, the series had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival and launched yesterday on NYTimes.com.

Incase you weren’t aware already, the series unfolds in four short, interactive films that viewers can navigate using touch commands like swipe, pinch, pull and tap. It includes an incredible array of archive photographs, brought to life with intricate animation, game play and touch-responsive videos that create exploratory experiences. The films are narrated by the Canadian musicians Feist and Cold Specks, as well as by Katerina Cizek, documentary filmmaker and HIGHRISE director, who wrote and directed the films.

HTML5 is the Future of Book Authorship

I expect that the coming year will bring continued growth and innovation in the sphere of HTML5-based software tools for publishers. In June of 2013, the W3C launched the Digital Publishing Interest Group with the goal of bringing together publishing veterans to work on bridging the gap between the needs of book/journal/magazine publishers and the technological capabilities afforded by W3C specifications.

At O’Reilly Media, as we work on transitioning to an XHTML5-source* workflow (which will be the cornerstone of the next release of our Atlas publishing platform),** we have posted an open source project on GitHub calledHTMLBook. The HTMLBook project contains an XML Schema that subsets the HTML5 content model to provide specifications for book-specific semantics, such as chapters, appendixes, and sidebars. Additionally, it contains a sample CSS stylesheet for styling HTML5 content for PDF output using CSS3 Paged Media, andXSL tools for autogenerating book navigation elements including tables of contents, indexes, and cross-references, as well as generating the necessary metadata and package files for EPUB 3 output. We look forward to continued collaboration around the development of HTML5 authoring tools for publishers.

An end of books

We're entering a new golden age for books, one with more books and ebooks being written and read today than ever before. No, books won’t be completely eliminated, just as vinyl records are still around (a new vinyl store is opening in my little town). But please don’t hold your breath for any element of the treasured ecosystem to return in force.

Is it traitorous to my tribe to write these words? I'm not arguing that we should push the ecosystem out the door, but I am encouraging us to not spend too much time trying to save it. First, it's a losing battle, but more important, we have bigger opportunities right in front of us.

Twenty years ago, I saw the web and wrote it off. I said it was a cheap imitation of Prodigy, but slower and with no business model. Partly, I just didn't see. But a big part of me wanted Prodigy (my client) to succeed, along with a business model I understood. As a result of my arrogance, I missed the opportunity to take advantage of a brand new medium.

Quartz turn everyone into a graphics editor

Quartz creates visualizations — charts, mostly — of data so quickly off the news cycle. The answer involved an in-house tool that made it relatively simple to turn a data set into a chart that fit Quartz’ visual aesthetic.

I was very happy, when tweeting with that tool’s creatorDavid Yanofsky, to learn that Quartz planned on open-sourcing the tool. It’s built on the amazing D3.js — built by The New York Times’ Mike Bostock — which is immensely powerful but also features a learning curve that’s proven a bit too steep for me. Today, that tool, Chartbuilder, is available for your use. (Here’s a chart of Apple’s stock price since May 3 that I made in about three minutes.)

Augmented Reality Bring Drawing To Life

ColAR (iOS/Android) is “the coloring book of the future.”:

First, you go to colAR’s web site and print out your coloring page of choice (the free app usually comes with one option included and a few others available for in-app purchase, but their full catalog is free until July 28th)… Once you’re done [coloring], pop open the app, and hit the “Play” button to bring up a camera view. Hold your drawing up to the camera, and bam! It takes your work of art and wraps it around an animated 3D model.

Six digital publishing startups to watch

You know you can blog with Tumblr or WordPress, or self-publish a book on Kindle or iBooks. But what’s next for the publisher who wants to sell a mobile-native magazine, or the blogger who’s sick of messing with plugins?

Here are six startups that offer new options to creators. Three of them — Periodical, 29th Street Publishing and Creatavist — let you create and sell mobile-friendly magazines, ebooks and newsletters; the other three — Postach.io, Ghost and Glipho — aim to let you blog in a new way.

Subcompact Publishing

There is an intuitive usability implicit to the physicality of our printed books and magazines. A reader is given two possible directions — which one depends on language and culture. And from there, a mostly linear, usually obvious interface.4

Tablet and smartphone books and magazines are not so obvious. They’re so not obvious that we often need tutorials explaining just how to use them.

Why did we jump to such complex interfaces?

Books in the Age of the iPad

As the publishing industry wobbles and Kindle sales jump, book romanticists cry themselves to sleep. But really, what are we shedding tears over?

We’re losing the throwaway paperback.
The airport paperback.
The beachside paperback.

We’re losing the dregs of the publishing world: disposable books. The book printed without consideration of form or sustainability or longevity. The book produced to be consumed once and then tossed. The book you bin when you’re moving and you need to clean out the closet.

These are the first books to go. And I say it again, good riddance.

Ingenting i dagens webstandarder gir slik støtte.

The Rise of the Multimedia Authoring Platform

As described to PW by 10 companies offering a variety of platforms for producing multimedia-enhanced e-books of all kinds, digital publishing is about creating “enriched” e-books and mobile applications that, in the most basic terms, integrate text into a content ecosystem of audio, video, image, animation, 3-D models, and the like. Of most importance is the fact that these companies are making it easier and more cost-effective for publishers to produce multimedia book projects and distribute them quickly across the full range of digital retail marketplaces, including Apple’s iBookstore and App Store, Google Play, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.

To make sense of where the e-book industry is heading, PW checked in with a range of firms, including Apple, Aquafadas, Atavist, Bibliolabs, Gutenberg Technology, Hurix Systems, Inkling, The Shadow Gang, Skyreader Media, Vook, and YUDU. While these aren’t the only firms offering multimedia authoring tools, their technologies are among those driving the production of many of the interactive e-books and mobile applications in the digital marketplace.

The People's E-Book

Why Ebooks Belong in the Web Browser

EBooks violate the fundamental promise of the Internet. Anyone can publish a website. Anyone can offer content for free or sell whatever they want from a website. Small commissions to payment processors and web hosting costs notwithstanding, the Internet empowers a seller to engage directly with a buyer.

Ebooks break this promise; the writer should be able to engage directly with the reader. The writer should be able to sell directly to the reader. Imagine if you had to pay your web hosting company 30% of your gross every time you sold an item on your website—that’s exactly what eBookstores do.

By separating the eBook from its proper home—the web browser—big media companies grow fat. This article explores the relationships between the web browser, PDF, Flash and eBooks—and how those relationships affect you.

The World's Greatest Book

En metode for utvikling

Joey Marburger er Mobile Design Director i The Washington Post.

Action – reaction; handling – reaksjon
Denne metoden går ned i funksjonene.

Amazon’s markup of digital delivery to indie authors is ~129,000%

So my book about travel came out last week! Think about buying it directly from me: This Book Is About Travel .mobi (Kindle Version) or This Book Is About Travel .pdf. A pretty exciting time. I’ve decided to write a few posts covering the launch and lessons I’ve learned. I self published it (wrote, designed, marketed and even did the layout for it) and am really proud of the project.

This post is about the where the sales of the book are coming from, and why Amazon takes 48% of digital book sales. Surprising eh? I thought Amazon was the BEST for indie authors, right? We will get into that later.

Self-publishing a Landscape Photography Book

In 2012, I self-published my first book of landscape photographs. I raised the funds to do this via the crowd-funding website Kickstarter.com.

I needed $11,000 to produce 1,000 copies. By its completion, the project had raised $39,383 from 341 backers - 358% of the original goal. Due to the success of this campaign, I increased the size of the book from 112 to 128 pages, printed 3,000 copies and produced an additional luxury leather-bound edition.

The fundraising was so successful that the book was profitable before it ever went to press, and I'm going to share the details of how this was achieved below.

Enhanced E-Books: Blowing Up the Book

The new novel "Chopsticks" tells the story of a troubled young piano prodigy—using family photos, letters, documents, instant messages and YouTube videos. It's a love story, a mystery and a parable about creativity and madness.

It's also an experiment, one that could have far-reaching implications for the book industry, as publishers stretch the definition of what constitutes a book. "Chopsticks" straddles the digital divide that is transforming the publishing world—it's both a novel and a digital app.

Fixed layout eBooks

Fixed-layout eBooks are a popular format for eBooks today, especially for children’s eBooks and for complex non-fiction like cookbooks and textbooks. Unlike standard eBook files, these eBooks can keep the same layout and designs as their print book counterparts, and can sometimes contain enhancements that make them more interesting and interactive. These eBooks are not PDFs. They are fully-functional HTML-based eBook files in every way, however, the specific styles and layouts used in these files are not re-flowable like standard eBook files.

eBook Architects - Fixed layout eBooks

Enhanced eBooks

As the eBook market expands we are seeing a surge in the demand for "Enhanced eBooks." Most authors and publishers only think of video or audio as enhancements, but there are many more things that we can do to make your eBook stand out from the crowd. Because of inconsistent progress in eBook technologies over the last few years, some of these enhancements are limited to specific eBook apps or devices.

The most prominent candidate for eBook enhancements is Apple's iBooks application. We can create great-looking ePub files with features that are unique to the iBooks platform, some of which will not even be valid in the current ePub specification. Please be aware that an ePub file with enhancements will require a new ISBN, one that is different than the print file and different than the standard ePub file built without the enhancements.

These lessons have been developed for educators to use in classrooms or workshops. They differ from the traditional tutorials but some content is very similar in both. For example, HelloPurr is the introductory lesson for both the tutorials and the curriculum, and it is similar to Part One of the Magic 8 Ball lesson. However, Magic 8 Ball provides a nice self-contained workshop for students to develop a fun, individualized, game app in a short amount of time.

In general, the lessons here in the Curriculum section of the educator's site provide a connected progression for students learning App Inventor, and are designed to be used in classrooms and workshops. Feel free to explore all of these and choose the pieces that work best for your setting.
